Technische Universität Berlin - Faculty VI - Planning Building Environment, Institute of Architecture

W3 professorship in the field of History of Building and Urbanism / Fachgebiet Bau- und Stadtbaugeschichte

About us:

Technische Universität Berlin has approximately 35,000 students, 350 professors, and 7,000 staff, and is a University of Excellence within the Berlin University Alliance. We very much value the diversity of our members and are committed to equal opportunities. We are a certified family-friendly university.

Your responsibility:

The professorship conducts object-based research into the historical development of the building industry and the materialization of the city from its beginnings to the present day in a regional, national, and global context. The core areas of architecture, i.e. construction, function, and design, are explored on the basis of urban and building documentation. The professorship's research in this field focuses on materiality, with the physical entities taking the central role as the primary source. The history of building, of the historical building stock, and of urbanism plays a critical role in reinforcing contemporary building practices within this context. The professorship aims to make the importance of this broader understanding valuable for research and teaching in architecture, as well as for an overall understanding of the built environment. To this end, the professorship pursues both comparative contemporary and cross-epochal considerations, which are viewed in relation to social, constructive, and technological developments. One of the professorship's key focuses is advancing the history of knowledge related to the building industry and the history of building technology in individual structures and their connection to urbanism. By researching structures through an object-oriented approach, aspects relating to construction processes, planning, and design are analyzed to uncover the broader knowledge embedded in these buildings. The professorship's tasks are to historically contextualize current building and urban development (sustainable building and expansion of the building stock during climate change; critical reflection on building and urban development from a gender, diversity, and post-colonial perspective, including social and cultural practices and intangible heritage; etc.), to develop perspectives for the building industry and urban construction, taking into account the importance of the building stock, as well as perspectives for the preservation of buildings and the expansion of historical building structures.

The future professor will be expected to acquire third-party funding for research projects and initiate large-scale collaborative research initiatives in interdisciplinary collaborations with other disciplines within and also beyond TU Berlin. In principle, the professorship is to work closely with the professorships/research groups specializing in history, design and construction at the Institute of Architecture, as well as those specializing in civil engineering, urban sociology, as well as planning and architectural sociology. The professorship is expected to expand interdisciplinary and intercultural cooperation, communication between science and practice, and research contacts with the natural, technical, or social science academic professorships at TU Berlin and other German and international universities as well as non-university research institutions in order to initiate large-scale collaborative research initiatives on this broad, interdisciplinary basis. The successful candidate will also implement a structured doctoral program and closely supervise doctoral candidates and their individual research concepts – "thesis advisory committee" (TAC) or similar. They will also be expected to participate in the PEP program (practice-based PhD).

The courses in the bachelor's and master's degrees in "Architecture", and those in the master's program in "Architecture – Typology," are given in German and English.

Further responsibilities include leading and managing the professorship and its staff; supporting the advancement of junior scholars, women, and diversity; knowledge and technology transfer; initiatives to promote internationalization; gender and diversity competence and sustainability-oriented action; as well as committee work.

Your profile:

Candidates must fulfill the hiring requirements pursuant to Section 100 of the Berlin Higher Education Act (BerlHG). These include a university degree in architecture, archaeology, or a related discipline with a focus on object and materiality-related research; a pronounced aptitude for academic work, generally demonstrated by the quality of the candidate's doctorate in the history of building and urbanism or a related discipline; additional academic achievements, generally demonstrated by a positively evaluated junior professorship, Habilitation, or equivalent achievement; and an aptitude for teaching documented by a teaching portfolio (for further information regarding teaching portfolios, please see the following TU Berlin web page: https://www.tu.berlin/en/go209650/).

The following expertise/qualifications are also required:

  • Object-related history of building and urbanism (buildings and urban complexes as primary sources), demonstrated through extensive academic work and successful acquisition of third-party funding
  • Critical reflection on the history of building and urbanism within historical, social, and cultural contexts, especially from a gender and diversity perspective, extended to specific, object-related measures in the context of climate change
  • Combination of analytical methods from the history of building and urbanism, the knowledge gained from the object in the field about constructive, functional, and design aspects of building construction with design methods in cooperation with the above-mentioned disciplines
  • Building analysis and scientific building documentation with up-to-date methods

The successful candidate must also have a background in at least four of the following key research areas:

  • History of building and urbanism with a global orientation for critical reflection on building and urban development from a postcolonial perspective
  • History of building and urbanism, taking into account the different scales: building, state, territory
  • History of knowledge of architecture and all players involved in construction and maintenance; history of building technology
  • Consideration of the building stock from the perspective of the building reform (Bauwende) and transformation, development of instruments and methods for extended knowledge of the building stock and systematization
  • Analysis of contemporary building in its material, constructive, and historical development
  • Berlin and its building stock, especially from the modern era, various monuments and non-listed building stock as a focal point for international discourse

Technische Universität Berlin requires professors to be willing and able to assume responsibility for the management and strategic development of their academic group and staff. In particular, this includes an understanding of the special responsibility of creating gender and diversity-sensitive work and study conditions. The position also requires the willingness and ability to advance junior scholars, women, and social diversity as well as to contribute to academic self-governance. The willingness and ability to provide new ideas for internationalization and sustainability-oriented action in research and teaching is expected. Experience with initiatives in science communication and knowledge and technology transfer is desirable.

As a university with an international profile, we require our professors to have excellent English-language skills and very much welcome applications from international candidates. The candidate must be able to give courses and carry out tasks in academic self-governance in German and English.
